What are California state laws of pre-1972 sound recordings? Many are mastered from vinyl copies, correct? Does sound recording imply also radio episodes or only songs?

Are pre-1972 sound recordings also part of copyright registrations of musical compositions? Lyrics and composition of BROADWAY RHYTHM (1935) are still copyrighted; I have found renewal registrations in the '1962 copyright catalog music', not 1963!

It is still not protected by federal copyright law, yet it is subject to state statutes and/or common laws.
